WHAT IS NURSERY SCHOOL?
Why is it important to your child? What should you and your child expect? What will they learn?
In the following information you will find answers to many of your curriculum questions, along with many of my feelings concerning nursery school for children ages 3-5.
Starting nursery school (especially young threes) can be a very scary, insecure time for some children. For many of them, this is the first time they will be separated from Mom for any length of time. They are going to an unfamiliar place to stay with relatively unknown adults. We are well aware of this and crying for the first four weeks or so is not uncommon. Most of the time, the crying stops soon after you are gone. We reassure your child that you will soon be coming back for them and then we try to interest them in some of our many toys or activities. Please be assured that we will call you if your child is unconsolable.
Children do get tired at school, especially at the start of the year. Even though nursery school is fun and free play time is scheduled, some children will tire and become cranky by the end of the school day.
Free play is a very important part of nursery school. The children learn manners, sharing, caring about others, listening skills, and to follow our class rules. They are:
1. Please never run, hit or throw toys. 2. Always share toys with others. 3. Always use an “inside” voice. 4. Always put your toys away when finished. 5. Always be kind to each other.
I want nursery school to be a happy, secure, comfortable, fun-filled and accepting place for your child to come to. I want to give them the best start and the most positive attitude towards school and learning that I possibly can. Our end goal in nursery school is to prepare your child for the most successful year in kindergarten that they can have. Please help us by reading to your child whenever you can and by talking to your child each day about their day at nursery school. This is the start of the open communication between you and them that they will constantly need as they grow and develop into young adults. Between us we can foster positive attitudes about school and learning that will stay with your child forever.
Most sincerely, Mrs. Gloria Morgan
